V&A/Decode - Hawaii Design

A ground-breaking digital and interactive exhibition.

V&A/Decode

The V&A approached Hawaii to design the exhibition graphics for its first ever digital exhibition. We employed our expertise across digital and print media to create a unique brand kit that was applied across the show, from the printed communication to exhibition signage. Inspired by the iconic British plug design, we devised a fluid and cohesive body of work in print and three-dimensional installation graphics.

This ground-breaking exhibition was a huge success. Following its debut at the V&A it was toured to the CAFA Arts Museum in Beijing.

Theme

Decode looked at three current themes within digital design: ‘Code’, ‘Interactivity’ and ‘Network’. A key feature of our design was to make the themes distinct and easily understood but also work cohesively. Each section was assigned a colour from the on-screen colour model, RGB: red, green and blue.

Gallery guide

We produced a forty-eight page gallery guide, which used a range of papers and print techniques, including dye-cut pages featuring patters we developed from our plug motif.

Gallery signage

Based on the plug prongs we created a bespoke numeric typeface, which was used on all communications, including sculptural acrylic signage panels.
